It's fun being back in this state, I've missed the forever rivalry of BYU and Utah. Even if the two schools are in different conferences and moving farther and farther away from each other, around here it's so deep that it's palpable.
As a primer: BYU is awesome and the Lord's school. The University of Utah is satan's den of villainy and nobody really cares about Utah State.
My boys are really into this whole rivalry, and honest I did not directly put them up to it. They have had big class discussions about the allegiance of every child in their Preschool and it apparently gets pretty intense. You can be goofy as a duck, wear glasses and smell like poo and you are still cool as long as you like BYU (though admittedly that kid is a Ute fan so he doesn't stand a chance.)
This morning we had a discussion about birthday parties. Briggie had his not long ago and his only criteria for inviting people is that they must like BYU--and he was adamant about it. Grandpa Cal, Bumpah, Grandma Nancy and Paul & KK are right out (the latter three were begrudgingly permitted when it was discovered that they were bringing presents.) Aaron is in, Mommie is in, dAddie didn't graduate from the Y but he has since repented and bought season tickets. Meemah is in and Tom is like a superhero. Grandma Susie is a difficult choice because as a young impressionable girl she was led to the U like Anakin to the Dark Force. Fortunately for her favor among blondies, she figured it out and "now she likes BYU so she's OK." For that exact opposite reason Grandpa Joe is straight out.
The other day we went into a house looking to see if we might want to buy it and we happened to have the blondies. The homeowners were there and both the lady and gentleman of the house were dressed in red PAC10.2 clothing. I had to lunge at BGB to stop him from finishing a sentence that began with, "Ooh gross you like the Utes! That's Yucky and we're not gonna..." They marked the price of the house up $10,000 on us because of the rivalry which is cool because I knocked $10,000 off my offer because of it too.
It's good to be home.
