Acorns and Butte Paste

This past week has been a fun one for baby things--fortunately one without any major shark attacks as well. What am I supposed to think about that dream any ways. I laugh and laugh about the story, but wonder, as women often do, if there is not some deeper meaning there. When he explained the story to me, it was not only a female shark, but old and slow as well. I know 30 is just around the corner, but slow too?!?! Maybe.

On Tuesday night some friends held a baby shower for me. We ate some good food, talked, shared some good advice and stayed away from too many horror stories about labor. I have heard more than my share and am not too interested in hearing any more. Anyways, people tell me that no matter what you hear, you cannot be prepared for what is going to happen. I am sure all moms, and probably husbands, would agree.

Little Golden (unfortunately still without a first name) is being well taken care of and provided for. We have got a diaper cake, loaded with 216 new baby diapers. We got some warm blankets, cute outfits, and a handy tube o' Butt Paste, among other things. That should last us the first couple of days, right. How fun to get so many cute things for our little guy.

On Wednesday, I had my 36 week appointment. Dr. Grant, my doc., said that all looks well. My belly measures at the right size--which I make sure to bring up when people tell me I look too small to be almost ready to pop. I just have a lot of room to spread up and out. In chatting with her, Dr. Grant mentioned that she would rather be at the hospital "playing with babies" then measuring bellies and talking about lower back pain. I cannot tell you how glad I was to hear that my o.b. likes delivering babies--always good news.

In the meantime, Adam has made great progress in the woodshop this week--working on several projects. (Contrary to myth, he continues to work very hard at learning how to fly the "Hercules" too. He he has the morning shift right now which means he gets home in enough time to rest a little, eat lunch, and play in the shop all afternoon. It is not quite all fun and games, but close.)
He assembled and glued the two long sides of the crib on Thursday. It is awesome to see it coming together and looking so good. On Friday, Adam was ready for a change of pace. He decided he wanted to try his hand, or hands, at wood turning. He has only turned a few things, or so he says, but he looked more like an experienced craftsman to me. I watched as Adam took a small rectangle block of maple, placed it on the lathe and skillfully turned it into a delicate little baby rattle.

This rattle includes a walnut cap (which I think makes it look a little like an acorn), a hollowed out hole inside for the "rattle", and a loose ring around the neck. Like I said, the kid has some mad skills. I am still in awe at the finished product and I watched the whole thing "turn out." It was not a planned project, but a great one to add to the nursery collection. We figure we'll let Golden, and subsequent little eggs, play with it until they get teeth, then it’s back on the shelf.

All in all, things are well. The holidays are fast approaching and we have lots of reasons to celebrate this year.
